Do you go before the Lord with sincere repentance?

Rend your heart, not your garments. Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity. (Joel 2:13)

Have any of you ever wondered what the above verse really means?
Here in Jamaica, I hear people say all the time, ‘rend your heart and not your garment,’ when someone goes to church in what one might think is not fitting. This has caused many, even myself, for years to believe that it meant to come to God as you are and not to watch what people wear.
It wasn’t until I read Joel chapter #2 in its entirety some year ago that I realized how far from the truth we were. I finally got the real truth.
Back then, in the Old Testament, people used to tear their clothes as a sign of repentance. But many forgot that the God who created all could tell when they were sincere, and this was what God was saying to them. Repent with your heart.
Many times we allow ourselves to fall into sin, forgetting that even though man can’t see what’s inside our hearts, our God sees all and knows if we are sincere when we finally decide to repent.
Don’t be deceived, brothers and sisters in Christ; whatever you sow, you shall reap. (Galatians 6:7) God’s words, not mine.
Don’t play with your salvation; it was paid for with blood and agony, and many are dying because they choose to believe in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, while we have him freely and don’t value our salvation.
So you may ask, How does one repent?

First of all, be conscious that you are going before the almighty and not some scum. Jesus’ blood made it possible for us to have access to the presence of God the Father, Yahweh. I Am that I Am. If you think about how much agony Jesus went through to give us that blessing, we should be more humbled before the Lord, don’t you think?
King David is one big example of a person who sinned a lot in the Bible, yet he was a man who God said was after His own heart. How is that, you might ask? Well, David acknowledged that he was a man with weaknesses, and each time he went before God, it was not for the same sin over and over. He learned from his sins and strived to keep from going back to them.
So if you, for example, keep repenting of the same thing, then instead of asking God for mercy and forgiveness, ask Him for strength to resist making the same mistakes and to break the stronghold that keeps you repeating the cycle. It could be generational, in which case it’s best to get a pen and paper and write down all the recurring sins you see not only in your life but in the lives of family members as well. Then repent sincerely (very importantly) of these on behalf of your entire family, and then you begin to renounce them from your life and family and break their hold.
I used to have an issue that I struggled with, and it became almost like an addiction. I felt so bad in my spirit after I fell into it, and I knew God did not approve, yet every time I would ask the Lord to help me stop, the moment I finished praying, that urge would come right after, and I felt discouraged.
What finally delivered me from that was having a serious talk with God—here I went before him with sincerity and desperation of wanting to rid myself of it. I told him I could not understand why each time I prayed, I would find myself falling into that temptation and always failing. I felt like he wasn’t helping me. When he answered me, it felt like a light had come over me.
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Romans 12:2 was His answer to me, and instantly I understood what he meant.
I needed to renew my mind
When you need repentance scriptures to help you pray, the Psalms are a good place to start, following King David’s example. Psalm 51 is a very popular one, but recently I found Psalms 28 and 32.
For some scriptural repentance prayers, follow the link below to scroll to the bottom to get them, but please read the entire post. I follow this website and learn so much about dreams and get spiritual warfare prayers to pray for each.
