How to See God in Hard Times: Finding Hope in the Midst of Struggles

God’s Presence in Life’s Toughest Moments.

There are seasons in life when everything seems to fall apart. The struggles, pain, and heartache can feel overwhelming, and it’s easy to question where God is in all of it. How do we see God when everything around us seems to be falling apart? How do we find Him in the midst of our deepest struggles?

In Life’s Journey our Greatest Test, the heroine, Sara, goes through unimaginable pain. After years of trauma, betrayal, and a long battle with fear and loneliness, she finds herself in a hospital room, wondering if she can keep going. It’s in this moment of crisis that Sara has an encounter with God—an encounter that transforms her pain into hope.

Sara had spent years running from her pain, unsure of where to turn. She had lost her job, found herself homeless, and even lived in dangerous shelters. But after a traumatic event, she reached a point of desperation. That’s when, for the first time in a long while, she prayed. And in her prayer, she asked God, “What did I do wrong?”

God’s response was simple yet powerful:

“Nothing, but fear not—for I am with you. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

So, how can you see God in hard times?

  1. Pray Honestly:

In your darkest moments, don’t hesitate to talk to God, even if you’re angry, confused, or feeling lost. Sara’s honest prayer in her hospital room was a turning point. She didn’t have to have all the answers or pretend to be fine. God just wants you to come to Him with a willing heart, even if that heart is broken. When you ask God for clarity and peace, you might find Him waiting for you with open arms, ready to offer comfort.

  1. Listen for His Voice

Sometimes, in the midst of pain, we feel like God is silent. But the truth is, God is always speaking—whether through scripture, the words of others, or through that still, small voice in your heart. When Sara asked, “What did I do wrong?” she wasn’t just asking for an explanation; she was ready to listen for God’s answer. God met her in her vulnerability, speaking peace into her heart when she needed it most.

  1. Look for God’s Presence in the Details:

Even in the hardest times, God doesn’t abandon us. He is in the details—the people who show up when you need help, the small moments of peace you experience, or the way you start to feel a little lighter each day. For Sara, it was the peace she felt in the hospital, a peace that seemed impossible in such a bleak situation. Sometimes, seeing God in our hard times is about recognizing His presence in the subtle moments that help us keep moving forward.

  1. Remember His Promises:

When we’re in the thick of our struggles, it’s easy to forget the promises God has made to us. But the Bible is full of reminders of God’s faithfulness. He promises to never leave us or forsake us. He promises to give us strength in our weakness. Sara’s breakthrough came when she remembered that God had a plan for her life—even though it felt overwhelming at the time. Holding on to God’s promises can help you see Him in the midst of your struggles.

Sara’s story doesn’t end in despair. Her journey is a reminder that even in the darkest moments, God is working behind the scenes. His presence doesn’t always make the pain disappear immediately, but it transforms our perspective. Just like Sara, who found peace and strength through God’s presence in the hospital, you too can experience that same peace, no matter what you’re going through.

If you're feeling overwhelmed and unsure of where God is in your struggles, remember that He is right there with you—just like He was with Sara in her pain. Take a moment to pray, listen for His voice, and trust that He is guiding you through your hardships.
