How Do You Practice Humility?

Before we can practice humility, we must first understand what it is.

The Oxford Dictionary defines humility as “the quality of having a modest or low view of one’s importance.” This doesn’t mean thinking less of yourself, but rather not exalting yourself above others or seeking recognition and honor for the sake of pride.

What Does the Bible Say About Humility?

  1. “Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.”Romans 12:16

  2. “By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honor, and life.” – Proverbs 22:4

  3. “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.” – 1 Peter 5:6

But in today’s world, many struggle with the idea of not being idolized or glorified. It's almost like a disease. Some believe:

  • “If I don’t promote myself, how will I prove my worth?”

  • “If I don’t talk about my achievements, who will recognize me?”

  • “If I stay humble, will anyone see or love me?”

But the truth is, our experiences and character are what bring favor and recognition in God's timing. Humility isn’t automatic—it’s something we must practice daily. It begins with gratitude for even the smallest blessings. Never despise the things you have or show ingratitude have received from others. God watches our attitude when we receive things from others too.

A Personal Example of Humility in Action

Ever since I was young, I prayed and asked God to keep me humble, so that when He lifts me up, I wouldn’t fall due to pride. One of my earliest lessons in humility came during high school.

My mother could only afford two school uniforms, one pair of socks, and one pair of shoes. But I didn’t see myself as lacking anything. I never complained about not having a uniform for each day or more socks. Instead, I made sure to wash my uniform every evening so I had a clean one to wear the next day.

By my third year, those uniforms started to show their age—fading and ripping at the shoulders. But instead of complaining, I used my sewing skills to mend them and continued wearing them proudly.

Some of my classmates noticed and began making jokes about my uniform. One girl even teased me while we were heading to art class. But I didn’t let it break me.

God was watching.

That same day, one of my teachers took notice. By the time school was over, she handed me a note and told me to take it to the main office. When I did, I was sent to the needlework classroom—where I was given enough fabric to make three brand-new uniforms!

I was in awe of how God provided for me without me having to say a word. That experience taught me that humility brings favor in ways we don’t always expect.

What Attitude Must We Have to Walk in Humility?

The key attitude is gratitude.

Here’s how you can cultivate humility in your daily life:

  • Don’t grumble when you don’t get what you asked for. Sometimes, God is protecting you or preparing you for something better.

  • Be generous. Give to others what you would want for yourself—whether they are homeless, struggling, or in need. What you sow, you will reap (Galatians 6:7).

  • Give with a good heart. Don’t wait until things are spoiled, expired, or unusable before considering giving them away.

  • Celebrate others without jealousy. Envy only leads to destruction. Instead, trust God’s perfect timing for your own blessings.

Is Humility a Good Thing?

Absolutely. Humility positions you for God’s blessings and promotion.

"Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He shall lift you up." – James 4:10

Word of Encouragement

Don’t feel invisible just because you aren’t pushing for recognition. God sees you. And when the time is right, He will allow the right people to see and acknowledge your efforts.

Trust Him. Stay humble. And know that when you do your best with the right heart, God will handle the rest.
