In 2 Corinthians 10:4-6 (KJV), the Word of God reminds us:
“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds; casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; and having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.”
To be a carnal Christian is to remain spiritually immature—living by the desires of the flesh instead of being led by the Spirit. Paul describes such believers as those who are still feeding on milk, not yet strong enough to handle solid food (1 Corinthians 3:1-3).
But God has called us to something higher:
“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in Spirit and truth.” (John 4:24)

Signs of a Carnal Christian
How do you know if you're living in the flesh instead of walking in the Spirit? Here are five signs:
1️⃣ Reacting in anger or offense instead of responding with grace.
If your first instinct is to argue, fight, or seek revenge when someone offends you, that is being carnal.
2️⃣ Struggling with unforgiveness.
If someone you’ve helped suddenly turns against you and you find it difficult to forgive, that is walking in the flesh.
3️⃣ Praying for someone's downfall instead of their deliverance.
The Bible tells us to love and pray for our enemies (Matthew 5:44). If you’re asking for their destruction rather than their salvation, you’re letting the flesh lead.
4️⃣ Willfully sinning while assuming God’s mercy will cover it.
If you knowingly commit sin (such as sexual immorality) while thinking, “God will forgive me later,” this is dangerous. Psalm 19:13 warns against presumptuous sins.
5️⃣ Turning to worldly solutions instead of trusting God.
When tough times come, do you cling to God’s promises—or do you seek help from sources outside of Him, such as psychics or ungodly influences?
How to Overcome Carnality
The key to overcoming the desires of the flesh is found in Galatians 5:16: “Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”

Galatians 5:19-26 contrasts the works of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit. When we recognize these differences, we can guard our hearts against temptation and grow in spiritual maturity.
Practical Steps to Walk in the Spirit
✅ Renew Your Mind with the Word of God.
The more of God’s Word you have in you, the stronger you become in resisting sin (Romans 12:2).
✅ Pray for Strength.
Ask the Lord to help you crucify the flesh daily (Luke 9:23).
✅ Put Off the Old Nature.
Paul tells us in Colossians 3:5-10 to put to death the sinful desires of the flesh and replace them with righteousness.
✅ Surround Yourself with Godly Influences.
Fellowship with believers who encourage you to live for God (Hebrews 10:25).
✅ Keep an Eternal Perspective.
What does it profit a person to be saved yet live in the flesh? It’s like a dog returning to its vomit (2 Peter 2:22).
Final Encouragement
The flesh will always try to pull us away from God. But if we truly surrendered our lives to Christ, shouldn’t we also surrender our desires to Him? When we choose to walk in holiness, God will meet us and guide us into truth and righteousness. However, if we allow our flesh to lead us, we put ourselves at risk of spiritual downfall.
