What does a wedding dress symbolizes to you?

Updated: Jan 23

As I was writing a scene for my upcoming book A Shattered Life Restored, a moment where the bride wears her mother-in-law's wedding dress made me think of a post I came across on Facebook some time ago.

Would you wear your mother’s wedding dress on your big day?

One comment caught my attention. The person said, “No, she wouldn’t, because her mother had her day to shine, and now she wants her own dress to shine.”

While I respect her choice, I couldn’t help but reflect on what makes passing down a wedding dress so meaningful.

Many people fear marriage—worries about divorce, hitting that 5-year hurdle, or even falling out of love. But the dress is more than just a piece of clothing. To me, it’s a symbol of a marriage that has weathered all kinds of trials.

When a mother has faced the joys, sorrows, frustrations, and anger of life with her partner—and after many years still finds herself loving him—passing down her dress is a way of blessing her daughter. It’s a gift, not just of a gown, but of the lessons learned along the way. It’s the strength, patience, and perseverance that came from understanding one another through the years, and the hope that her daughter will carry those lessons into her own marriage.

To me, it’s like God passing down a blessing through the victory of someone else’s journey.

Sometimes, the greatest gifts aren’t the shiny or sparkling ones, but those that give us strength and courage to be victorious in our own paths.

I’d love to hear your thoughts! How do you see the tradition of passing down a wedding dress? Has this post given you a new perspective? And even if you're a man, I’d love to hear what you think about your mother passing down her dress.
