Why Does God Allow Your Enemies to Rise Against You?

“The Lord shall fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.” — Exodus 14:14
Have you ever wondered why certain people seem determined to oppose you? Why some battles feel relentless? The truth is, sometimes God allows our enemies to rise against us—not to destroy us, but to reveal His power and deliverance.

When God Hardens Hearts
When I first read the story of Moses and Pharaoh, I was struck by something profound: God Himself hardened Pharaoh’s heart. Time and again, Moses went before Pharaoh with the command, “Let my people go.” And yet, Pharaoh’s heart remained stubborn. Why would God allow this?
The answer is found in Exodus 10:1:
"Go to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the hearts of his officials so that I may perform these signs of mine among them."
God did this for two reasons:
To display His power—so that His people would have a testimony to pass down through generations.
To give the enemy an opportunity to repent—or, like Pharaoh, to experience God's judgment.
This principle still applies today. When enemies rise against us, it is an opportunity for God to reveal Himself, strengthen our faith, and ultimately, remove opposition from our lives.
The Wilderness—A Place of Deliverance
Even after Pharaoh let Israel go, God hardened his heart again, stirring him to pursue them. The Israelites found themselves trapped—Pharaoh’s army behind them, the Red Sea before them. It seemed hopeless. But this is exactly where God wanted them.
The wilderness, that dry and difficult place, is often where God moves most powerfully and destroys our enemies completely.

Moses reassured them with these words:
“Fear not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will show to you today: for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you shall see them again no more forever. The Lord shall fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.” — Exodus 14:13-14
God gave us these words through Moses to encourage and strengthen us when doubt and fear try to take hold. When we feel like murmuring against God, just as the children of Israel did in the wilderness, we must remember:
“And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? Wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt?” (Exodus 14:11)
I know it’s not easy when people come against you, speaking ill of you—saying hurtful things that break your spirit. I go through that too, and in those moments, I remind myself—Jesus did too. So instead of holding onto hurt, I pray for God’s mercy upon them and for strength to endure.
Or maybe you know your calling, and you’ve stepped out in faith, yet you don’t see the fruits of your labor. You’re working hard, trusting God, but still struggling to provide for your family and ease their burdens. The Apostle Peter reminds us in 1 Peter 5:9 that all of our brothers and sisters across the world face similar struggles. This verse helps us know that we are not alone and strengthens us to stand firm in faith.
"The battle is the Lord’s."
Hold fast to God’s promise—He does not give us more than we can bear. Just as He delivered Israel from Pharaoh, He will deliver us from our enemies. Keep trusting Him, keep praising Him.
