How to Grow Spiritually and Strengthen Your Walk with God

To understand spiritual growth, let’s first define growth itself. According to the Oxford dictionary, growth is "the process of developing physically, mentally, or spiritually." However, for anything to grow, it needs a source. So, what is the source of our spiritual growth?

The answer is simple: The Bible.

The Importance of Spiritual Growth

The primary purpose of spiritual growth is to build a deeper relationship with God. Through His Spirit, God guides us in discovering and fulfilling our divine purpose. Think of it like this: Our physical bodies need food to develop and function, and similarly, our spirits need the Word of God to grow and develop into the person God has created us to be. The Word of God directs our steps and draws us closer to Him.

Since God is Spirit, it only makes sense that we should nurture the part of us that connects most deeply with Him—our spirit. I’ve written another post titled “What Happens When You Fail to Feed Your Spirit?” where I dive deeper into this idea. You might find it helpful in gaining more insight.

How Do You Grow Spiritually?

To grow spiritually, think about the things you do to take care of your physical body—the important stuff. For example, you eat several times a day because if you don’t, you’ll feel weak or sick. In the same way, try to read the Word daily—at least a verse, if you’re short on time. That verse will nourish your spirit. Just like when you eat, you don’t overstuff yourself, take your time with the Word. Don’t rush through it. Allow it to sink in—meditate on it, just as you would let your food digest.

What Happens When You Fail to Feed Your Spirit?

When you neglect your spirit, it becomes more carnal (Galatians 5:19-21). Some of us pollute our bodies through unhealthy habits like smoking, drinking too much alcohol, or drug abuse, forgetting that our bodies are God’s dwelling place (1 Corinthians 3:16). Likewise, we can pollute our spirits by indulging in things like witchcraft or watching movies that invite negative influences into our lives. I write a post about being carnal you can read here.

So, What Really is Spiritual Growth?

Spiritual growth is simply the process of reading the Word of God—our spiritual food—and letting it direct our steps and thoughts. The more you read, the stronger and healthier your spirit becomes. You’ll become more attuned to the voice of God and better equipped to discern whether you’re hearing from God or the devil.

Feeding your spirit with the Word of God allows the Holy Spirit to become more active in your life. His role is to lead us into all truth, and as a result, your relationship with God will grow deeper. You’ll also gain a better understanding of God’s will for your life and His purpose through you.

The Word of God will strengthen you, especially when your enemy comes. It acts as a shield, defending you from all of the enemy's attacks. And if you ever struggle to understand what you read, don’t worry. Sometimes, it’s not the right time for understanding. I’ve often found that God uses life circumstances to help me understand a scripture I couldn’t fully grasp earlier.

Final Thoughts and a Friendly Tip

John 1:1 tells us, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” This verse shows us just how powerful and important the Word of God is.

Before you dive into the Bible, I recommend a prayer of repentance. We often don’t realize the sinful thoughts that run through our minds, and sin can build a wall between us and a deeper understanding of God’s Word. Repentance clears that barrier, allowing us to receive His revelations.

I hope this post has helped you understand what spiritual growth is and why it’s so important for your relationship with God.
